Knight in shining armor

 And a red mini skirt.

silver shirt, metallic shirt

I found this fabric right around Purim which is the Jewish Halloween. It was laying right by the satin yellow fabric with pink polka dots and a roll of yellow faux fur.
It was a hard choice, but I chose the silver fabric as I didn't think the yellow fuax fur would compliment my complextion.
It was also a whopping 2$ a meter. How could I say no to that?
(It's not like I came back a month later a bought a few more meters of this fabric to make shirts for my friends. We plan to all wear them at them same time. and bunny ears.)

I decided to make a simple shirt as the fabric already is quite unique as it is.
I used my custom bodice as a guideline for the shirt. I decided to make a rounded hem  - I've seen this on many shirts in stores and stuff and thought it would be a nice addition. I know this feature doesn't really deserve a whole sentence but there really isn't that much to say about this pattern.
Luckily, I have a sewing blog.

From the back.
I really like what the rounded hem does to my booty. A lot of uplifting action.

I basically serged the edges and hemmed the armholes and neckline.
It really did take me like an hour to make this.

See that glare on my shoulder? It's blinding.
I try to stay out of direct sunlight for fear of looking like a vampire:

That is also what I look like without a shirt on.

The only thing about this is shirt is that it's not the most flattering silhouette in the world. It kind of makes me look like the width of my whole body is the same width as my boobs. (which are surprisingly large in this last photo if I do say so myself)

What are your thoughts about interesting fabrics? Do you, like me, tend to make basic patterns for these or does this not stop you from going all out in the pattern department? I'd love to know!

Heart cut out Dress

I've been having a horrible sewing day. You know when you get this great idea and you're excited about it and doing a little dance. Then NOTHING WORKS. NOTHING.
Anyway, I had to let out some steam. Here's my latest project, this is actually a really good day to post this, I really like this dress and it reminds that I am capable of sewing. I kind of forgot today and it's nice to see a close up of my face and be reminded of that.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

Yes! I made a cut out dress! I have joined the many lines of sewers who have cut out a hole in their garment and called it sewing.
I have chosen to a heart because it is romantic, elegant and shows a lot of cleavage. I am a true lady.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

This was pretty fun to make. The fabric I used kind of felt like a bedsheet, which made it SO easy to use and handle. I love it when fabric does exactly what I say unlike the purple chiffon I was using today which did everything it could to defy my authority.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

I got my eyebrows plucked today. This did not help my I love sewing vibe today - it's hurts to look surprised and arch my eyebrow in contempt of other people's cut out dresses.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

The back is kind of normal.
THAT IS NOT A FAT FOLD. It's not like I spent a week in Ireland eating fish and chips and ten pounds of bread every day.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

The issue is that the heart tends to lose it's shape every time I move. In this dress I sit still and display my heart and order everyone around. And drink tea. And say the word Marvelous repeatedly.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

I wore this on the train a few days ago and this beautiful stylish turban wearing Ethiopian girl told me that I look pretty. It was so random and sincere I almost cried.
Luckily a minute later this guy put a whole tomato in his mouth (not a cherry tomato. a whole tomato) and (I really don't know how he didn't see this coming) splattered everyone around him. I did not suffer the aftermath of this, but almost peed my pants from trying not to laugh.

Heart cut out dress, cut out detail, cut out dress

This is the cleavage I was talking about. OH YEAH.

The heart cut out was pretty easy to make. Let me know if you want to tutorial for this!

Yes I know I kind of overdid it with the pictures.

What do you think? Have you ever made a cut out garment? If not, are you thinking of attempting this style?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

How to attach chains to your shoulder seam

This look is quite easy to accomplish! It only involves a bit of hand sewing and mostly relies on the beautiful finish the bias tape gives the sleeve line.

What you will need:
1) Bias tape. It can be the same color as your shirt or a different color for contrast!
2) about three and a half meters of chain - if you learn from my mistake. (I'll explain later)
2) thread, sewing machine and basic sewing supplies.

Measure your shoulder seam (If you're making the shirt from scrap, all you need to do is measure the shoulder seam in you pattern, if you're adding the chain to a ready made shirt, measure the shoulder seam and add about 1/2 seam allowance so that you can hem the bias tape on both sides to create a nice finish)

Cut two strips of bias tape measuring to your shoulder seam (with or without the seam allowance).

Cut your chain in to six pieces (or more if you like, but make sure you have to pieces in every length). I made the chains 40cm long, 50cm long, 60cm long. I kind of regret making the 40cm strip as it is quite short. I'd suggest making:
Two pieces of 50cm chain
Two pieces of 60cm chain
Two pieces of 70cm chain
You now have six pieces of chain that you can pair into pairs according to their size.

Mark your bias tape: Each bias strip should have three markings, I marked mine, 5 cm from the edge and then another two spaced 3 cm apart. (the 5 cm edge is the part that's close to the neckline).

Attach the chains to the bias strips: attach the 50cm chain to the 5cm marking, in a loop formation (attach the two ends of the chain to the bias tape). Now attach the next size up chain to the next marking and so on:

Next pin the bias tape to your shoulder seam with the 5cm marking closer to the neckline:

Make sure you arrange the chain in the correct manner so that when you sew it down the chain will hang from both sides of the bias tape.

Sew your bias tape to your shoulder seam with the chains stretched out on both side of the bias tape.
Then finish the blouse as you would regularly!

Admire your creation!

Chain of Fools Blouse

”chain

I'm really happy with this blouse.
1) it has studs and chains, which makes it trendy. which makes me cool.
That's me, climbing the social ladder. And let me tell you, there's a long way to go.
2) It's black. I know this is like a no-no for sewers but I love black.
3) It's kind of flattering as it's not tight yet it has a feminine silhouette. (Yup that's taken right out of a Victoria's Secret catalog)

The making of the shirt was quite easy, the shirt is made out of a basic pattern I constructed from my custom bodice and I made a little pocket (which really was the most frustrating part of the blouse) and attached little studs to it. Attaching the chains was a little time consuming but not as much as you'd expect. I'll post a tutorial on how to exactly attach chains to your shoulder seam in a few days, so be sure to check it out!
I finished all the seams with bias tape, I used satin bias tape in the neckline as I wanted it to be visible, and cotton bias tape for the armholes as they they are hidden.

Details.
I like the kind of punk rock vibe of the shirt, if my skin weren't as translucent it might even be believable.

I've decided to put some effort into styling myfaceself to accommodate my creations. I wanted to go with the punk-rock style, and while contemplating on getting a mohawk I ended up in this 90s look, which I think I'm happy with.
Obviously I could have upped my game a bit:

But all my plaid knee high socks were in the wash.

”diy

MORE DETAILS. Next time I make a blouse like this I think I'll make the chains longer. I also accidently put my hand through the chains (they ended up hanging under my armpit) when I put the shirt on and it looked kind of cool. Only I couldn't get my arm through the smallest chain as it was throttling my bicep. I really should stop working out. I am one step away from looking like this:

I kill myself.

It kind of looks like I have a piece of chain in my hair. That is what happens when the bottom of my hair meets the top of my hair, after a slow motion emotional reunion, they argue, and then the top of my hair becomes afraid that I'll dye it again and frizzes up in revenge. To that I say, you win, hair, I am at your mercy.

I leave you with a picture of my left boob pocket.

Don't forget to check in for the tutorial!
